The number of people in the hotel surprised me as I walked through the doors. It was closed to the public, but many people were working there. Most of them appeared to be other Shifters from their Pride, though. I immediately spotted Stephen in the thick of the action delegating work to a few different groups. He approached me as soon as he saw me.

“What a surprise,” he said, stretching his hand out to shake mine. “I wasn’t expecting you for a few days.”

“I finished a couple of sketches early and figured I’d bring them in to gauge your thoughts. I think you’ll really like them,” I explained.

“Let’s go to my office,” he said, gesturing for me to follow him through the hotel.

His office was on the first floor of the building near the bar area. The lavish design of his office didn’t surprise me at all. I wouldn’t say I knew Stephen well, but he struck me as someone who knew what he wanted, and this office reflected that commitment to decisions. The walls were painted a dark brown, and there were paintings and sketches of lions in all manner of living. Some were sleeping with their Pride, others were mid-hunt, tearing the throat out of a helpless gazelle. The desk was small and made of glass; all that rested on top of it was a laptop and a few file organizers. There was an old-fashioned decanter with a brown liquid, four matching lowball glasses, and a countertop humidor to one side. It seemed like an old-fashioned setup because I didn’t think Stephen was older than me. Still, his classic tailored suits gave the impression that Stephen appreciated the trappings of a bygone era. Behind him was a wall with several shelves, and on top of them were fancy awards with his name on them.

“I didn’t realize this was a chain,” I commented when I saw the hotel excellence awards.

“Yes. We aren’t large enough for many to recognize that immediately. And we pride ourselves on creating a unique experience tailored to the location of each branch. Still, we currently have three fully opened locations, with a plan for at least three more, including this one. We’ll hopefully gain some more traction,” he answered with a bit of pride coming through. I got the sense he was a key member of the decision-making team.

We sat on opposite sides of the desk, and I pulled out the sketches.

“I’d been doing some research, and I was inspired by a particular pack I read about in Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda,” I started. “I wanted to show you the idea before I got further into planning because the approach is a bit, umm, unorthodox. I think that is the best way to describe it.” I handed in the sketches of the lions in the trees.

“Can’t say that is what I expected, but can’t say I don’t like it,” he said as he looked at the sketches more closely. “What drew you to this imagery?”

“Honestly.
